Labor day notice

As I’ve traveled around our district I have seen some pretty amazing individual accomplishments that help advance the educational experience for staff and students. When put together, they are a record of achievement few, if any other district can match.

Above all, they reflect the immense talent and leadership that you and your colleagues in the DCSMEC family bring to fruition every day. We are stronger because of your dedication. I am very grateful for your efforts and very proud of your performance.

Once more we have risen to the challenge and accomplished our task of a successful opening of school, students and teachers are safe and comfortably at work molding and shaping future leaders. Thanks to your hard work.

This weekend take some time to enjoy some well deserved rest and relaxation with friends and love ones. Please keep in your prayers our brothers and sisters in the Huston area who have lost so much due to flooding and hurricane disaster.

My sincere best wishes for you and your families on this Labor Day weekend.

Opening of schools notice

To all members,

After working through the heat of a South Florida summer once again we find ourselves in that magical time of the year getting ready for the start of school. Nobody does that better than the DCSMEC family. It seems year after year we have to do more and more with less yet somehow, someway we always come through. This year will be no different especially between now and the start of the school year on Monday; there is much to do with not enough time or personnel to do it. Management has acknowledged a better working relationship with labor than ever before, a good step in the right direction. First time in years we have new hires and safe vehicles, we still have a long road ahead of us, but I feel we are moving in the right direction.

As I’m sure most of you already know you will be working long days through the weekend to accomplish this goal. Everyone from site personnel to upper management will be out in force daily making sure the schools are ready for staff and students, in order to address any issues that may arise. Brothers & Sisters, please be careful and safe, stay properly hydrated and diligent in the task at hand. Most of all let me convey how proud I am of you and to be a part of the best maintenance program in the country.

On behalf of DCSMEC and the 4th largest school district in the nation, thank you for all you do and do so well.

Prevent Heat-Related Illness

DCSMEC WANTS YOU TO BE AWARE & BE SAFE!

Brothers & Sisters,

Let’s be prepared to deal with another South Florida sizzling summer.

Things You Can Do to Prevent Heat-Related Illness.

Working in hot environments and/or prolonged exertion can raise the body’s temperature resulting in heat stress that may lead to heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat rashes, and even heat stroke. According to OSHA, heat stroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness and can be fatal if not quickly treated. The symptoms of heat stroke can include a change in mental status that can range from confusion to bizarre behavior to seizures, collapsing or even passing out.

Although avoiding exposure to extreme heat, sun exposure, and high humidity altogether is preferable, when this is not possible, workers should take the following steps to prevent heat-related illness and fatalities:

1. Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing, such as cotton. Avoid non-breathing synthetic clothing, and always wear a hat.

2. Schedule heavy work during the coolest parts of the work day. If these tasks must take place during the hottest parts of the day, gradually build up to that work.

3. No matter how tempted you are to skip them, take scheduled breaks at a minimum, more if needed due the hot conditions. Cool down, find shade or an air-conditioned space.

4. Always wear your PPE when required, take into consideration PPE can increase ambient temperatures by as much as 10°.

5. You should acclimate yourself by being exposed for progressively longer periods to hot working environments gradually. If necessary, utilize relief workers for physically demanding jobs, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

6. In addition to monitoring your own physical condition, keep an eye on your fellow workers and call for help immediately if they become confused or act strangely during work in a hot environment. Move them to a cool area immediately.

7. Drink water frequently, even if you are not thirsty. Consume approximately 1 cup every 15 to 20 minutes. By the time you become thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Water and low-sugar beverages are best to rehydrate your body. Also avoid drinks with large amounts of caffeine or sugar when working in hot environments, as these will cause you to become dehydrated more quickly.

NOTE:
A tried & true method for greatly decreasing the possibility of any heat related illness is to well hydrate yourself the day before. Drink a large amount of water the afternoon & evening before a sweltering day of work, you will notice the difference! Also, minimize alcohol consumption the day/evening before, you’ll be glad you did.

Let’s have a great summer, these times are always exciting in South Florida, to keep it that way let’s just be aware of the hazards that can occur when we are exposed to the summer heat for prolonged amounts of time.

Be Aware! Be Safe!

From all the officers of DCSMEC, have a safe, productive & enjoyable summer.

Highlights of DCSMEC/ITS Collaborative Meeting”

May 18, 2017 ITS Meeting

On May 18, 2017, there was a collaborative meeting with ITS management, DCSMEC leadership and DCSMEC regional ITS Stewards at the ITS district warehouse building located in the city of Doral.

The following topics were discussed;

A. Differentiate job tasks between NDCS Tech and NIST.

B. Define policies pertaining to servicing personal devices as part of the BYOD program.

C. Define and/or determine a solution for UDT service requests of laptops and tablets. UDT device management review.

As a result of the discussions there were suggestions and potential resolutions discussed about the issues. However, some issues that were discussed could not be remedied due to the magnitude of repercussions that could result in excessive and/or unnecessary responsibilities.

D. Differentiate job tasks between NDCS Tech and NIST.

1. As stated by ITS administration, NDCS Techs and NIST’s differ in network infrastructure access. NDCS Techs will not have access to certain network applications. All NDCS Techs are authorized for basic network and server troubleshooting. NIST’s will have access to advance troubleshooting of networking equipment as well as infrastructure software.

2. NDCS Techs will be hired from an external pool of candidates.

3. NIST’s will be hired/promoted from the internal pool of qualified NDCS Techs.

E. Define policies for the servicing of personal devices as part of the BYOD program.

4. ITS administration acknowledges and confirms that there will be limited/no support for personal devices.

5. ITS administration stated that there will be creation and distribution of a policy memo pertaining to BYOD support by NDCS Techs and NIST’s to all applicable personel.

6. ITS administration affirms that any issue with BYOD support that is not in compliance with policy can be escalated to upper management if the issue is not resolved by an immediate supervisor.

F. Define and/or determine a solution to a UDT service request; as well as a UDT device management review.

7. There is an agreement that there will be continued communication between ITS and UDT to resolve the issue of service request creation and resolution for district devices in the 1-on-1 initiative.

8. It is acknowledged that all school sites are to have a DSP (Designated Site Person) that will manage and submit trouble tickets on the local school site level. This position has been mandated by the school district and cannot be filled by a member of the ITS department, i.e., NDCS Techs nor NIST’s.

The meeting concluded with the above recommendations and approval of ITS management, DSCMEC, and representatives.
It has also come to agreeance that quarterly meetings for the purpose of collaboration should become a regular occurrence.
